Area rescue crews used an inflatable boat to retrieve the two hikers who said they became stranded after walking out to the island at low tide

Two people needed to be rescued Thursday evening after a quickly rising tide left them stranded on a rock near Timber Island, a remote section of the popular Timber Point hiking trail in coastal Biddeford.

According to the Biddeford Fire Department, emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 8:52 p.m. from the two hikers who said they were “cut off from shore” by the rising tide and could not return to shore safely.

Rescue units from Biddeford, Saco, Kennebunkport and Arundel located the two individuals roughly 15 minutes later. The Saco marine unit used a small inflatable rescue boat to retrieve the stranded hikers.

Firefighters said neither person was injured or in need of medical attention, and they were returned to shore at the Kennebunkport side of ocean channel.

The Timber Point trail is described as an “easy-to-moderate” 1.4-mile loop trail winds through the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, offering a mix of forest, salt marsh, and sweeping ocean views that includes a rocky coastline, wildflowers, seabirds and driftwood.

At low tide, you can cross a short causeway from the trail to Timber Island.

Low Tide at Biddeford Pool occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on Thursday.
