‘There’s no crying in lacrosse’

By RANDY SEAVER | Editor

The University of New England Nor’Easters club lacrosse team was full of enthusiasm and high spirits during their warm-up stretches in the moments before their final game of the season Saturday against the St. Anslem Hawks.

But unfortunately, the Nor’Easters walked away with a disappointing 5-4 loss.

While a cold steady drizzle blanketed the field, the small band of UNE fans felt even more glum when the first quarter ended with St. Anslem leading, 3-0.

“We started well, and after letting in three goals in the first quarter, our defense only allowed two more goals the rest of the game,” said Head Coach Donald Vivian who is also senior assistant director of undergraduate admissions at UNE.

“Unfortunately, we struggled to find the net, but the group kept fighting until the end,” Vivian added. “A low-scoring game really speaks to a defensive battle with strong goalkeeping.”

Before the game started, five UNE seniors were recognized during a brief ceremony that allowed their parents onto the field to accept long-stemmed flowers from the pending graduates who would soon be playing their last game for UNE.

According to Vivian, those senior players were the ones who pushed for the creation of the club program, “leaving a lasting impact on campus.”

“They [the graduating seniors] took the chance and followed their interests and passions, which opened the door for other students down the road to do the same. I hope that the seniors will be proud in the future,” the coach said.

Jake Power was one of those seniors, and his parents — Joe and Gretchen Power — drove to Biddeford from Westford, Mass., just to watch their son play his final game at the University of New England.

“Not the best weather for a game,” Joe Power said with a grin. “But it’s good to be here, and there’s no place I’d rather be right now.”

Nick Welch, another Westford, Mass., resident, also joined the Power family to watch as his “good friend” Jake took the field.

The student volunteers in the broadcast booth also had a little fun on Saturday, reading off the names and future plans of each senior player.

When Jake Power was introduced, the booming voice over the speakers announced that after graduation — Power would soon be employed as a “technician for NASCAR motor racing.”

In fact, according to his family, Jake will actually be completing graduate work in marine entrepreneurship after earning his bachelor’s degree this year.

According to Club Sports Director Patty Bohn Williams, UNE has 23 active club sports team, a number she described as “unique for a school this size.”

Saturday’s close loss may have been a heartbreaker, but as the shout that was heard loud and clear from the UNE bench just moments after the game started, “there’s no crying in lacrosse.”

Members of the Biddeford High School Tigers Unified Basketball Team faced their opponents Thursday with steely gazes and wide grins.

It was a thrilling game that ended the regular season for the Unified Basketball program in southern Maine.

The Tigers traveled to Sanford and took on the mighty Spartans with determination and grit, and when the final buzzer sounded, Biddeford walked off the court with a solid 90 – 84 win.

“We took it the end with Brandon Lambert throwing several three-pointers and teammates Bentley and Ayden continuously scoring their two-pointer shots back-to-back,” said Biddeford Coach Lauren Cote.

“We finished the season with a bang,” the coach said excitedly just minutes after the final buzzer.

Both teams offered a packed house of spectators a thrilling sporting event that encapsulated the spirit of players who each demonstrated pure, unfiltered joy in simply being able to play on the hardwood in front of their cheering parents, friends and family members.

Players from both teams offered each other numerous high-fives and exploding fist bumps. The smiles were unmistakable, and the Tiger Pride spirit filled the Sanford gymnasium.

The Spartans also played their hearts out and were able to repeatedly close some big gaps as Biddeford’s offense capitalized on vulnerabilities under the boards.

The Spartans never slowed or showed any diminishing enthusiasm. They deployed some stunning break-away defensive moves that gave them opportunities for another drive down the court for wide open two-pointers.

Cote and fellow coach Craig Chamberlain both said the Tigers had “a great season with many wins and some losses also, but our players and partners always go into a game with the greatest team spirit and they always play to the best of their abilities,” Cote said.

“They love the game so much — with all of their hearts and Tiger Pride shines through every time,” the coach added. “We are so proud of every single one of them.”

Biddeford Tigers will face Mt. Ararat Eagles for Class A state championship

In just a few hours, fourteen young men from Biddeford will create a memory that they will likely never forget.

Tomorrow, the Biddeford High School Tigers (15-4) will face the Mount Ararat Eagles (17-3) in the Class A Maine State Championship baseball game.

The game begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s College in Standish.

BHS Coach Keith LeBlanc says that his team, which includes seven seniors, is “battle-tested” and ready to play their hearts out on Saturday.

“I am very proud of these players,” LeBlanc said during a brief interview on Thursday.

LeBlanc took over as the Tigers’ head coach in 2012. He has seen a lot of games, but says his current team really stands out – both in performance and attitude.

Saturday’s game will be LeBlanc’s first state championship match-up. He says he and his players are taking nothing for granted.

“These players have faced many high-pressure situations,” LeBlanc said. “I am confident in them, but we’re not easing up even an inch before this game.”

LeBlanc said the Eagles (the No. 1 seed team in the north) will likely offer a formidable challenge to the Tigers.

“They [the Eagles] are very similar to us,” LeBlanc said. “They have strong pitching and an overall solid defense.”

Speaking of defense, LeBlanc says sophomore Ernie Dore will lead off the mound for the Tigers. Dore is a second-team, all-conference pitcher.

LeBlanc is also expecting strong performances from the team’s co-captains, Gavin Haggett and Landon Sirois, both first-team, all-conference players.

Haggett will be attending Stonehill College in the fall, and Sirois will be attending Southern Maine Community College.

LeBlanc said he considers himself lucky to be this team’s coach.

“Every team is a good team,” he said. “But there is something special about these players. It’s their humility and willingness to push themselves.”

According to LeBlanc, the players have created their own motto: “Stay humble.”
