Jeanne Gall:

“. . . I have lived in New Hampshire for 50 years now, but my mother (96 years) still lives in my childhood home on South St.  I rent a place at Hills Beach and my best friends still live here as well.  Needless to say, I miss The Journal and The Courier and very much appreciate The Biddeford Gazette. You are doing us all a great service with your publication.”

Margaret O’Neil, Saco:

Thank you for publishing the Biddeford Gazette. I particularly appreciate the coverage of municipal government and the good works of our fellow citizens – news that one can’t find elsewhere. I have two suggestions.

First, please make the Gazette less self-referential. We don’t need to hear so much about editor, how the subjects of his article treated him, and how the Gazette is covering stories. And we don’t need all the hype about “as the Biddeford Gazette reported last April”, “as exclusively reported by the Biddeford Gazette”, etc. Just publish the facts and offer a link to a prior article if it is relevant.

Second, the news coverage (and captions) sometimes sensationalizes the matter being discussed. For example, I found the recent description of the city’s appeal of the case involving UNE a little over-blown. Of course, the city appealed; it’s easy and cheap to do, and politically the mayor and council had no other real choice. And, of course, UNE said that the appeal was frivolous. I don’t see that as a sign that tensions between the parties are increasing, as the Gazette reported. More of a nothingburger in the course of litigation, but the article caption probably served well as clickbait as it spread out on Facebook.

In any event, thanks for doing what you do.”

” . . . As a reporter you’ve been a fixture in this community for decades now. Sometimes you are inconvenient, sometimes you make us uncomfortable, and sometimes the powers that be desperately want you to flinch. Please don’t.”

“You do your homework, you are aware and vigilant, you consider both sides of a coin, but above all, the fact that you truly care about the issues in question comes through in your writing. I have always known of the power that words have to move people and to topple empires, both of which are the two best reasons I can think of for you to rock on.”
