Yesterday’s tragedy in my home city of Biddeford, a city built by generations of our families, incorporated as a town in 1753 and a city in 1855, is heartbreaking.
Biddeford exemplifies the American dream, a community that instills in their children the importance of contributing to something larger than oneself and provides hope and idealism to brave immigrants who come from every corner of the earth to build a better future.
Mr. Guerrero, like all of us, was chasing the American dream and contributing to the Biddeford economy. The people of Biddeford work hard in all manner of professions vital to our well-being, roofers, carpenters, electricians, social workers, teachers, food servers and health care providers to name a few.
Biddeford gave me both strong roots and wings, a sense of identity, good-humored humility, and lifelong friends. My loyalty to and pride in Biddeford are steadfast, and I know the city will continue to appreciate its immigrant inheritance and support its immigrant future.
My condolences to the entire Biddeford community and everyone in our country that has suffered such intense loss.
