Fiber Materials, Inc. (FMI) – A Biddeford-based manufacturing firm — will receive a Maine Science Award for its positive impact on the state’s science industry and ongoing research.
According to a press release from the Maine Discovery Museum, FMI will receive one of five awards being given at an annual celebration that recognizes scientists, innovators, researchers and advocates advancing science across Maine.
Fiber Materials has more than 50 years of experience in producing advanced composite materials for the aerospace and defense industries.
The firm supplies thermal protection systems and components used on NASA missions and national defense platforms while employing hundreds of Mainers in high-tech manufacturing.
The inaugural Maine Science Award celebration will be held in Bangor on Oct. 15.
Event organizers say the evening will bring together Maine’s scientific community, business leaders, educators and neighbors “for cocktails and curiosity, dinner and a formal ceremony honoring this year’s five honorees.
“Science is everywhere in Maine,” said Kim Stewart, director of Curiosity at Maine Discovery Museum. “It’s in our forests and our fisheries, our hospitals and our classrooms, our startups and our shorelines.
“This year’s honorees represent the very best of that work, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate them at our inaugural ceremony.”
As the first event of its kind for the Museum, organizers say the Maine Science Awards is intended to become an annual tradition, “a night that spotlights excellence in Maine science and sends attendees home inspired.”
