Biddeford mayor issues ICE shooting statement

The city is keeping a tight lid on details regarding a Monday morning fatal shooting that involved federal ICE agents. Mayor Liam LaFountain issued a formal statement.

A Biddeford Police Department spokesperson said their agency it will not be issuing any statements or more information about this morning’s fatal shooting incident near the intersection of Hill and Pool streets.

Shortly before 2 p.m., Mayor Liam LaFountain issued a press statement about the incident, but other city officials say that all information must be obtained from the from the U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement Agency (ICE).

ICE has not yet issued a media statement.

LaFountain’s full statement is below.

“This morning, a human life was lost in our city.

“My thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who died as they face an unimaginable loss. They deserve compassion, dignity, and, in time, a full understanding of the circumstances that led to this tragedy.

“I was shaken to receive the news and was subsequently briefed by the Biddeford Police Department regarding the fatal shooting on Pool Street involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

“A person has died, and
their loved ones and the
people of our community
deserve clear answers about
what happened.”

“I have been in contact with Governor Mills, Senator Collins, Senator King, and Representative Pingree as we seek clear answers and a full accounting of what occurred. I have been told that there is strong cooperation among local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as the circumstances surrounding the use of deadly force are investigated. I expect that cooperation to continue, with all appropriate authorities working together and sharing the information necessary to establish the facts.

“We will get answers, but we do not have them yet. I am calling for a full, thorough, and transparent investigation into this fatal incident, with the full involvement and cooperation of appropriate state law enforcement authorities. A person has died, and their loved ones and the people of our community deserve clear answers about what happened.

“I recognize the fear and uncertainty that an incident of this magnitude has brought upon our city. The safety and well-being of every person who lives, works, and visits our city remain my priority.

“The city will continue to seek verified information and share factual updates as they become available. I recognize that members of the press have an important responsibility to ask questions and report on this incident, and I appreciate the patience of both the public and the press as we pursue the full truth of what happened this morning.”
