CONTRIBUTED STORY | Biddeford Cultural & Heritage Center
The Biddeford Cultural and Heritage Center (BCHC) invites the public to two special programs this June highlighting the diverse traditions and stories of Biddeford’s history. These events are part of BCHC’s year-long Semi quincentennial programming commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Caribbean Vibes Steel Drum Band at La Kermesse
On Saturday, June 20, BCHC will sponsor a performance by the Caribbean Vibes Steel Drum Band as part of the La Kermesse Festival. This collaboration with La Kermesse reflects a shared commitment to honoring both Franco-American heritage and the broader multicultural diversity of southern Maine. Voices and Vision Lecture: “Shamrock Seeds: Biddeford Irish-Americans, 1855–1890”
On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., BCHC will host author and Biddeford native Dan Dutcher at the McArthur Library (270 Main Street). In his presentation, “The Forgotten Story of Biddeford’s Irish-American Founders,” Dutcher will explore how famine-era immigrants helped build the city’s railroads and mills, established St. Mary’s Parish, and emerged as influential civic leaders.
Dutcher, a University of Notre Dame and University of Kansas School of Law graduate, retired after a 35-year career with the NCAA. His research offers a deep look into the immigration and industrial history that shaped modern Biddeford.
“These programs reflect BCHC’s mission to explore the many cultures and stories that have contributed to the history of Biddeford and our nation,” said BCHC representatives. “As we mark America’s 250th anniversary, we are proud to highlight both the cultural diversity of our community today and the historical experiences that shaped it.”
