You ready for a cool local story?
Biddeford’s iconic Palace Diner made it onto the Top-15 list in a London-based newspaper’s ranking of America’s best “old-school diners.”
The Daily Telegraph – more commonly known as The Telegraph online -described Biddeford’s well-known diner as a “classic joint” with a “thoughtfully curated menu.”

The May 28 story by Jacqui Agate heaps plenty of praise onto the historic diner that is tucked away on Franklin Street.
“Born in the 1920s, this classic joint is another of the US’s oldest – in fact, the vintage Pollard dining car is one of just two of its kind left in the US today.
“That helping of diner history should be enough alone to encourage a visit, but a thoughtfully curated menu (that’s much shorter and more refined than that of most similar outlets) is another draw card.
“If you’re in for breakfast, go for the Lumberjack plate: you’ll get a stack of five pancakes, eggs, potatoes and meat. For lunch or dinner, the favoured menu item is the fried chicken sandwich: it comes piled on a sesame bun with jalapenos and coleslaw.”
Gazette reader Steve Hanly brought the article to our attention.
“Perhaps international recognition is of local interest,” Hanly wrote in his email to the Gazette.
The Palace Diner was ranked as No. 11 on the Telegraph’s Top-15 list.
The next step for the Gazette?
We’re reaching out to our friends “across the pond” in the town of Bideford, a coastal community in England that is our “sister community.”
Despite the spelling difference, Bideford and Biddeford are very similar communities, sharing a manufacturing history, coastal location and a vibrant community spirit.
The Gazette follows the town of Bideford on Facebook, and we’re constantly amazed by the similarities of the two communities.
Maybe the Telegraph story is enough to prompt a visit to Biddeford from a representative living in our sister city.
If that happens, we’re going to make sure that visit includes a trip to the Palace Diner and maybe a “Lumberjack plate.”
