NEWS | Firefighters quickly control incident at Fiber Materials in Biddeford

The cause of a Sunday morning incident at Fiber Materials, Inc, in Biddeford’s Morin Street Industrial Park remains under investigation, according to Biddeford Fire Chief Lawrence Best.

According to a media statement and eyewitness reports, a Fiber Materials employee asked for assistance with a “graph cooling system” in the building a little after 7 a.m. on Sunday, June 28.

After an initial evaluation, additional units were called to the scene and firefighters established water supply using a hydrant on Morin Street to begin supplying emergency back-up water for the cooling system.

Roughly 45 minutes later, additional units were requested from surrounding towns. Firefighters from Arundel, Saco, Goodwin’s Mills and Kennebunk responded to the scene while Scarborough firefighters provided additional coverage at the fire department’s Central Station along with Biddeford off-duty and call-force firefighters.

Crews conducted cooling operations until approximately 11:15am and then transitioned a return to normal facility operations mode at 12:25 p.m., Best said.

Best said there were no civilian or firefighter injuries. The last Biddeford fire units cleared the scene at 12:45pm.

According to the company’s website, Fiber Materials is a materials solutions company that develops and manufactures high temperature materials and composites for use in defense, aerospace and industrial applications.
