Biddeford school budget gets big support; Platner dominates senate race in Biddeford

Biddeford’s June 9 election results showed overwhelming support for the Biddeford School Department’s budget and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner.

According to Richard Lambert – a long-time political observer and an Associated Press election correspondent — Dr. Nirav Shah led the five-way race for the Democratic nomination to be Maine’s next governor in Biddeford’s tabulations

On the Republican side of the ticket, Benjamin Midgley had a slight lead over Robert Charles in Biddeford, but early results show Charles with a strong lead across Maine.

In the race to represent Biddeford as a York County Commissioner, Roch Angers showed a lead over fellow Democrat Doris Ortiz, but the results from the towns of Arundel, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport were not available at press time.

Angers garnered 1,590 votes over Ortiz with 1,394 votes in Biddeford.

The school budget passed by a strong 3-1 margin, 3024 – 1131.

Platner dominated his party’s race to challenge Republican Susan Collins in November.

In Biddeford, Platner dominated the field (2,287), crushing Gov. Janet Mills who suspended her campaign in April. Mills picked up 639 votes, outpacing third-place finisher David Costello’s 310 votes. Andrea LaFlamme barely moved the needle in Biddeford, capturing only 33 votes for the U.S. Senate primary.

In Biddeford, Shah led the five-way race for the Democratic nomination to become Maine’s next governor with 955 votes; Hannah Pingree picked up 719 votes; Troy Jackson finished third with 653 votes; Shenna Bellows finished with 598 votes and Angus King III rounded out the pack with 336 votes.

The eight-way Republican gubernatorial primary election in Biddeford showed a close finish. Midgley led the pack with 243 votes only slightly ahead of rival Robert Charles (231). The other GOP candidates finished as follows:

Jonathan Bush (191); Garret Mason (80); David Jones (36); Owen McCarthy (24); James Libby (15); and Robert Wessels with 8 votes.
