According to a media statement, nine Biddeford residents were forced from their homes as the result of Friday morning fire on Granite Street.

Officials say the fire started shortly before 5:30 a.m. Several firefighting units from Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Arundel, Kennebunk, Wells, Scarborough and Goodwins Mills responded to the incident at 49 Granite Street.

A fire department spokesperson said Biddeford firefighters arrived on-scene and found heavy fire coming from the second-floor apartment in the rear of the building.

All six occupants from a second-floor apartment and three occupants from the first-floor unit had evacuated just prior to the arrival of the first Biddeford Fire units.

The nine residents are now being assisted by Red Cross volunteers and the city’s General Assistance department with housing and other needs, according to officials.

Crews were able to contain the fire to the second floor, but the fire caused heavy damage to the apartment and extended into the roof.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
