Alfred Street sewer project begins in April

CONTRIBUTED STORY | City of Biddeford

The city of Biddeford has contracted with Gorham Sand & Gravel to separate combined sewer lines on Alfred Street (between Summer Street and Porter Street), as well as Mt. Vernon Street, Birch Street, and Porter Street.

The project is expected to begin on April 13 and will continue through November 2026 in six phases, according to city officials.

The project is being completed as part of Biddeford’s ongoing sewer separation efforts, which are required by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. The previous single-pipe sewer system will be replaced with separate pipes for sewer and stormwater flows. Once the replacement is complete, stormwater runoff will be discharged directly into receiving waterbodies, while wastewater will be treated before discharge, improving water quality.

Each of the of the construction phases are expected to last month, according to a city spokesperson.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS

The city does expect some traffic impacts during the projects. Motorists are being asked to use caution and to please allow time for potential traffic disruptions.

During construction on Alfred Street, adjacent side streets will be limited to one-way traffic from Alfred Street to minimize vehicles entering the work zone. Mt. Vernon Street, Birch Street, and Porter Street will be open to one-way local traffic only while these streets are under construction.

Throughout the project, on-street parking will be prohibited on Porter Street and Fall Street to allow emergency vehicle access. In addition, parking on Alfred Street will be prohibited between Summer Street and Porter Street beginning on May 11 through completion of the project. On-street parking prohibitions will be in place on Birch Street and Mt. Vernon Street during their respective construction phases.

Sidewalk closures will be required during construction for pedestrian safety. Whenever possible, the contractor will keep sidewalks on one side of the street open.

As work progresses, the information above is subject to change. Important updates to traffic plans will be communicated on the City of Biddeford website, www.biddefordmaine.org/alfredstreetproject.
