Lessard officially enters state rep. race

Marc Lessard — an outspoken and popular member of the Biddeford City Council — says he looks forward to “a campaign of ideas” in the Dist. 133 House race

The longest serving member of the Biddeford City Council is now seeking a new challenge – an opportunity to bring his leadership style and a fiscally conservative approach to a larger stage, launching a campaign to oust Democrat Marc Malon from the Dist. 133 seat in the Maine Legislature.

City Councilor Marc Lessard has been a fixture at City Hall for more than 30 years, beginning his political career in 1993.

An outspoken and sometimes brash member of the council, Lessard consistently receives the highest number of votes as an at-large member of the council.

“People trust me and know who I am,” Lessard told the Gazette on Wednesday morning. “I want to continue representing Biddeford people to the best of my ability – in every way I know how.”

As exclusively reported by the Gazette, Lessard first floated the idea of challenging Malon in February.

Now Lessard has made his candidacy official. On Wednesday, he and wife, Denise, drove to Augusta with a stack of nomination signatures that were verified by the Biddeford City Clerk’s office.

Lessard is running as unenrolled candidate, more commonly known as undeclared or independent.

“People know me. They expect me
to stand up for what it is right,
even if it’s not popular.”

Malon, an ardent Democrat, is hoping for a third consecutive term in the Dist. 133 seat. He was never challenged in his first two campaigns. Earlier this year, Malon told the Gazette that he welcomes the opportunity to show voters a contrast and described political competition as both “healthy and necessary.”

In addition to his service on the city council, Lessard, 63, is also the chair of the York County Budget Committee.

Marc and Denise Lessard have two grown children and three grandchildren. He is employed as director for external contract manufacturing for H.P. Hood, a leading New England dairy.

Lessard has never shied away from controversy, and often makes passionate arguments for controlled spending, greater government accountability and fair standards for residents and business owners in the city.

“I have never been a shrinking violet,” Lessard joked during a previous interview. “People know me. They expect me to stand up for what it is right, even if it’s not popular.”

Lessard says he will continue his role as a city councilor, regardless of how the state election pans out in November.

As for his job, Lessard said he has not made any firm decisions.

Because he is not running as a member of any political party, Lessard will be able to essentially skip over the June 9 primary.

Malon, once again, is unchallenged in the Democratic Party primary election.

Lessard said he will not accept any campaign donations, saying he does not want to be beholden to any individual or organization.

“What you see is what you get,” he said. “For more than 30 years, my primary focus has been to look out for the city of Biddeford. This changes nothing.”

  1. Good luck Marc! Your opponent is a good enough man but it always amazed me how he couldn’t have a conflict of interest being the head of the democratic party leadership and be fully representative of all the people. Seems unlikely he would vote outside the party on issues. Just my opinion.
