LETTER | Being unhoused in Biddeford is not a crime

We the people need to help one another and bring back family values.

Editor:

As a resident of Biddeford, I am concerned with the ongoing unhoused population.

Biddeford is a city with lots of cultural heritage and is a booming tourist destination.  Being unhoused is not a crime, but sometimes when speaking with people who choose not to stay indoors at the only shelter available — Seeds of Hope Neighborhood Center at 35 South Street — I hear the same words over and over again: “I cannot find housing!”

I often ask why and am told that due to their background check, no income, substance abuse disorder and a variety of other issues that they have been refused housing…  How do we get the unhoused into housing?  We the people need to help one another and bring back family values!

When I grew up in the city of Portland’s West End neighborhood, we were all one big family. My mother worked, and I often looked after by my neighbors for breakfast.

Seeds of Hope does an awesome community breakfast, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. daily.  They also offer showers to the unhoused community who do not have a stay at the overnight shelter. T

The overnight shelter is currently funded, in part by the city of Biddeford. They also accept donations to help with clothing, food, bedding and various items that the unhoused and community may need on a daily basis.

Please join me in helping the unhoused community in Biddeford get housed.
